The Mid-Life Fitness Crisis

Old dogs CAN learn new tricks

About

As one heads into the forty’s, the idea of being 50 looms on the horizon. For many men, this can be a time of reflection, change,, transition, and even upheaval. The busy years of the 30’s and 40’s give way to questions about career, relationships, spirituality. For me, I had all that (for another blog) but I also had a renewal of my interest in fitness, exercise, health, and nutrition. Maybe renewal is not quite right since I never had any strong athletic pursuits in my earlier years. Quite frankly, I was nerd growing up (Ph.D. in Chemistry, if you must know). My athletic endeavors included racing sailboats in high school and college, playing pickup basketball, and some “jogging”.  But as turning 50 loomed, I looked around and decided I was not going to let my fitness fade with my age. So at 47, I bought a road bike and began this fascination, exploration, and education into the world of athletic endeavors. So as my wife says, maybe not a crisis but more of an obsession.

I’ve put together this site with some trepidation. In my mid-fifties now, I am plenty computer savvy (programmed assembly language in grad school) but wary of social media. I don’t have a Facebook account (yet), don’t Tweet (likely never will) but I do have a LinkedIn profile. To me, social media borders on voyeurism at best and narcissism at worst. All the social interactions are nice but the “Look at me! Look at me now!” aspect is troubling.

So at the risk of falling into that same voyeuristic trap, I’m putting up this site to inspire those men (and women) who think turning fifty is a time to slow down or that it’s too late to take up a sport. NEVER! With proper training, nutrition, and self-awareness, people in their fifties, sixties, and even seventies can participate in a wide range of athletic endeavors.

My posts are on a variety of topics related to fitness, training, and nutrition. The Rides and Races page are reports on various events.  I also have a Rides and Races spreadsheet which provides a listing of all the events I’ve done.
